Вышел очередной релиз дистрибутива SimplyMEPIS за номером 6.0. Данная версия примечательно тем что основана на Ubuntu 6.06LTS.
Как говорится в пресс-релизе по-случаю выхода дистрибутива "SimplyMEPIS - это полноценная рабочая среда, призванная удоволетворить ежедневные потребности пользователя компьютера".
Теперь только остаётся понять -- чем же были не удоволетворены пользователи после того как вышел собственно сам Ubuntu 6.06.

MEPIS has announced the upload of the first official beta of the upcoming 7.0 release of SimplyMEPIS. Since the pre-beta of two weeks ago, there have been several changes which are included in Beta 1: a 2.6.22.3 kernel, kernel drivers for the Ralink family of wireless cards, other updated drivers, KDE 3.5.7 updates, better appearance of splashy, and the latest Debian Etch security updates. The live CD now offers an option to boot with the Aufs read/write filesystem but this is not yet well tested. MEPIS 7.0 is based on a Debian Etch core combined with up-to-date user applications that are recompiled by MEPIS from upstream Debian and Ubuntu common source code. Debian Etch users are welcome to get their updated applications from the MEPIS pools.

The kernel in beta 4 is version 2.6.22.6 which contains more patches from the kernel development team. The MEPIS kernel was tweaked to eliminate some boot time warning messages. The ATI video driver was updated to eliminate an annoying AMD watermark bug. Wireless tools and wpasupplicant were updated. Configurations were adjusted to improve K3b, wireless networking, keyboard and language support, video defaults and boot options. In the MEPIS pools GNOME Games, Sylpheed Claws, Evolution, and GTK-QT Engine were updated in response to user requests. The MEPIS OSX Assistant was recompiled and tested for OSX Leopard and to use the 0.10 version of rEFIt.

MEPIS has announced the 'Lysistrata' release of antiX, a light-weight derivative of SimplyMEPIS 7.0. This version of AntiX is built using the MEPIS Linux 7.0 core including the MEPIS 2.6.22 kernel and utilities, but mostly it has a different set of default user applications: Fluxbox and IceWM window managers, AbiWord, Gnumeric, Scite, Nano, Iceweasel, Sylpheed, Pidgin, XChat.... AntiX is designed to work on computers with as little as 64 MB RAM and Pentium II or equivalent AMD processors, but not K5/K6 processors. After installation, even 32 MB RAM has worked. The new ISO images are available in the 'released/antix' subdirectory at the MEPIS subscriber's site and at the MEPIS public mirrors.

Warren has uploaded a second 8.0 beta, SimplyMEPIS 7.9.80-beta. SimplyMEPIS 8.0 offers up-to-date user applications delivered on top of a Debian 'Lenny' core. Important package changes in this beta include Linux kernel 2.6.26.5, OpenOffice 3.0rc2 and OpenJDK 6. The new kernel supports VirtualBox 2.0.2, which is available for installation from the SimplyMEPIS 8.0 pool. Pluggable NTFS devices are once again handled automatically with NTFS-3G. At this time, permanent NTFS devices must be mounted manually with NTFS-3G. An automatic solution is being investigated. This release introduces a striking new desktop theme developed by MEPIS community members.

ISO files of the fourth beta of SimplyMEPIS 8.0 are available for 32-bit and 64-bit processors. In this release the kernel has been updated to the upstream version 2.6.27.3 and the Broadcom wl driver is now available for wireless network cards. The MEPIS Network Assistant has been updated to address the incompatibility between the open source b4x drivers and the wl or NDISwrapper drivers.

SimplyMEPIS 8.0 beta 5 updates several packages. ISO files of the fifth beta of SimplyMEPIS 8.0 are available for 32-bit and 64-bit processors. In this release the kernel has been updated to upstream version 2.6.27.5 and the extra drivers have been rebuilt for the new kernel. GRUB has been updated to 0.97. It is hoped that this will resolve the problems a few users have reported with not being able to access a bootable CD. The core of MEPIS is being kept in sync with the upcoming Debian stable release, Lenny. Recently, NSPluginWrapper 1.0.0, VirtualBox-OSE 2.0.4, OpenOffice.org 3.0.0, and Firefox 3.0.3 were updated in SimplyMEPIS and in the MEPIS 8.0 pool.

Анонсирован выход популярного десктоп-ориентированного дистрибутива SimplyMEPIS 8.0, основанного на пакетной базе Debian Lenny и Debian Testing. В качестве графической оболочки используется KDE 3.5.10. В новом релизе по умолчанию включена поддержка IPv6 и DNSSEC. Дополнительно подготовлен, основанный на KVM и libvirt, комплект пакетов для запуска виртуальных окружений. Дистрибутив доступен в виде LiveCD с возможностью установки на диск для 32-разрядных и 64-разрядных x86 систем, размер дискового образа 680Мб.

Из присутствующих в базовой поставке приложений можно отметить: Linux ядро 2.6.27.18, Xorg 7.4, OpenOffice 3.0, Firefox 3.0.6, Sun JavaSE 6u12, Amarok 1.4.7, mplayer 1.0.rc2, проприетарные драйверы для видеокарт NVIDIA и ATI, подборка дополнительных драйверов для беспроводных карт, шрифты и мультимедиа кодеки.

MEPIS LLC has released SimplyMEPIS 8.0.10, an update to the community edition of MEPIS 8.0. SimplyMEPIS 8.0 uses a Debian 5.0 'Lenny' stable foundation enhanced with a long-term support kernel, key package upgrades, and the MEPIS Assistant applications to create an up-to-date, ready-to-use desktop computer system. The updated components on the SimplyMEPIS ISOs include recent updates from the Debian 'Lenny' pool and also the security-patched Linux kernel 2.6.27.30, rt2860 driver 2.1.2.0, Firefox 3.5.2, Google Gadgets 0.11.0, ALSA 1.0.20, BIND 9.6.1-P1, and KNetworkManager 0.7. In addition, some minor tweaks have been applied to the MEPIS installer and the MEPIS utilities.

This release includes recent Debian security updates as well as MEPIS updates which include Linux kernel 2.6.27.43, OpenOffice.org 3.1.1, Firefox 3.5.6, and BIND 9.6.1-P2. Also available are Skype 2.1.0.47 and Mono 2.4.2.3. The MEPIS installer was updated to fix a recently discovered bug that sometimes interfered with installing MEPIS as the only operating system on a hard drive.
