TCP traceroutes
The widespread use of firewalls causes many traceroute packets to be filtered, often making it impossible to completely trace the path to the destination using traditional ICMP and UDP packets. However, in many cases these firewalls permit inbound TCP packets to specific ports, enabling TCP traceroute to bypass the most common firewall filters. The TCP traceroutes capability is available on the Windows 2000/XP/2003 platforms only.
Network scan
Scan network first determines which class C network the host in question resides in. It then sends ping packets to all possible IP addresses for the network, looking for any host that is up and running. This process helps determine if a non-responsive host is due to the network to that host being down, or due to the particular host itself being down.
