Спустя почти 2 года, вышла новая стабильная версия GIMP.
GNU Image Manipulation Program или GIMP (Гимп) — растровый графический редактор, программа для создания и обработки растровой графики. Частично поддерживается векторная графика. Проект основан в 1995 году Спенсером Кимбеллом и Питером Маттисом как дипломный проект, в настоящий момент поддерживается группой добровольцев. Распространяется на условиях GNU General Public License.
Изменений с последней стабильной версии 2.2 очень много, все даже не перечислить, отмечу что сильно улучшена поддержка различных проприетарных форматов, в частности PSD, поддержка импорта кистей Photoshop, появились новые инструменты и фильтры, новая тема иконок, поддержка CMYK и многое, многое другое.

Выпущена первая нестабильная версия GIMP новой ветки разработки. Изменения более чем достойны внимания:
использование GEGL для некоторых операций цветокоррекции, а также в инструментах цветокоррекции из верхней половины меню «Цвет»;
приличная часть кода портирована на Cairo, что особенно заметно в диалоге коррекции кривых;
новый инструмент многоугольного выделения;
начата работа над реализацией текстовых блоков как таковых (при смене размера блока буквы сами переносятся на строку выше или ниже);
параметры инструментов занимают меньше места на рабочем столе;
заложен фундамент для категоризации ресурсов (кисти, градиенты и т.д.) метками;
при закрытии последнего изображения остаётся висеть окно, в которой можно перетащить изображение, так что вы больше не потеряете GIMP на десктопах;
меню из панели инструментов окончательно перенесено в окно документа (оптимальная организация меню пока не достигнута);
в рамках одной сессии запоминаются все ранее использованные параметры инструментов цветокоррекции (всё та же верхняя половина меню «Цвет»);
переписанное заново расширение для загрузки PSD;
прочие улучшения.
Стоит помнить, что версия 2.6 — промежуточная. Её задача — заложить фундамент для будущих коренных изменений, таких как долгожданная поддержка CMYK и CIELAB, 16bit/32 float point на канал, HDRi и так далее.

Отдельно следует отметить, что коррекционные слои в привычном виде могут никогда не появиться, потому что композитинг на основе графов подразумевает несколько иной интерфейс и более мощный функционал Кстати, именно эта особенность архитектуры GEGL позволит малой кровью реализовать запись и воспроизведение макросов.

Что касается текущей реализации GEGL в GIMP, флажок "Use GEGL" в панели инструментов пока что лучше держать снятым. Дело в том, что данные сейчас пересчитываются из 8 разрядов на канал в float (80 разрядов) и обратно. Это существенно замедляет обработку изображений. Разумеется, в конечной версии 2.6 это будет исправлено. Вполне возможно, что GIMP не будет работать с той же скоростью, что и раньше, но функционал разработчикам, по их собственному признанию, сейчас милее повышенной производительности.
